The Limestone

I am the limestone

a fossil I am

the remnants of otter

leftovers of clam.

All bones with no marrow

all teeth with no gum

a skull with no brains

not much of a sum.

The great oceanís weight

crushed creatures together

weíre closer and tighter

and bonded forever.

Calcium carbonate

sedimentary dust

organic creatures

what counts is our crust.

Now take me and use me

to help build a wall

I realize my purpose:

stay in place and donít fall.

I am the limestone

a real piece of mass

one day Iíll breakdown

and return to morass.
